5.0 out of 5 stars TASCAM US144 MK-II, August 13, 2012

This review is from: TASCAM US144 Interface and 990/991 Mic Pack Bundle
MXL 990 microphone is an excellent quality microphone for affordable price! Highly recommend microphone for both amateur and professional singers on a budget! Overall the microphone works excellent, good quality sound and durable; well worth the price. Usually XLR cables are sold separately but came with the purchase and made it an even better deal!

From the description, was expecting original TASCAM US144; actually received US144 MK-II which is a slight upgrade in performance and look; definitely a plus! Only took about 25 minutes to start recording; 20 minutes was the software installation (ran into slight issues), 2 minutes to connect everything and 3 minutes for adjusting levels, feedback, etc. No issues since I've had it hooked up and I'm a very satisfied customer!

ONLY negative feedback I have is with software installation for TASCAM interface... skeptical at first; people are known to have difficulties installing equipment from TASCAM (although majority of... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price but I find it a bit muddy, February 28, 2005

It's hard to beat this mic on price. I have one and often use it for home recording projects, demos and such. It's a good inexpensive way to record vocals, but I find the sound a bit muddy, and often come back with eq to turn down some of the low-mid frequencies. Now there are a number of condensers coming out in this low price range, and I've tried a few of them and haven't yet found a cheap one I like any better than this. For finished products, I'd use a better mic if available, but this one will work with a bit of EQ and a careful ear.

The mic requires phantom power, so I got the Art Tube MP preamp to go with it. That preamp warms up the sound and really helps this mic out compared to the built-in mic pre-amps on my board.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price, perfect for podcasting, November 15, 2005

I have two of these because they're SO cheap and use them mainly at home if I have a musical idea. One of the reviewers above mentioned it was a bit muddy which I totally agree with. But it's incredibly cheap and fairly detailed for that amount of money. I'm curious how it will hold up over years of use. Anyway, this is probably the perfect "step-up" mic for podcasts if you are currently recording with your computer's built-in mic or a radio shack dynamic mic. I would choose this over the m-audio mics- it feels slightly more durable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mic For the Price, September 14, 2004
This review is from: MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount
I purchased this mic to record mandolin and acoustic guitar in my PC based home studio and couldn't be happier.

It accurately reproduces my Taylor acoustic guitar. When used in conjunction with an ART tube pre-amp, it actually enhances my low cost mandolin.

No regrets here!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bang for the Buck, December 29, 2009

I'm a singer/songwriter "Spot of Blue" and recently purchased this condenser mike combo to work with my mbox 2 and pro tools at my home studio. I got a great deal through a dealer on Amazon vs. some other top music supply sites about half the cost! I use an ART tube pre-amp and get some great warm sound with this cardioid patterned mike. Sure you can always spend thousands more but, I find it gets the job done for song ideas and works great on mixes for vocals. The instrument mike is a bonus the way I see it and has proven to have a more than substantial characteristics for some recording acoustical guitar. This is a great combo for any mike locker at a super price. It doesn't come with a shock mount and I picked up a nice Nady universal that works great. All in all a well made product for the money.

Okay so this isn't your Neumann U87. But it also doesn't cost three grand. I needed a decent mic to record music and do voice overs. This works. I've used the small capacitor mic to record my music and musicians for a documentary I did. I've used the large capacitor mic for voice overs and narrations for news stories that I have done. It works, plain and simple.

Usually in post, I'll add a little bit on the bottom to warm it up, but not much. I find it pretty quite too as long as I am paying attention to the room tone and noise floor.

If you don't have a lot of money and want something under $100 bucks, this is a good bet.

Also note, that if you are doing podcasting, you probably should not get this set. It's XLR so you will need to have a mixer with phantom power to use these babies. For the same price you could get an USB mic without having to fork out the extra cash for the mixer.

I've also used these while recording sound on... Read more

These will do nicely in your home studio. I got these two mics for 75 bucks. Cant beat the quality for the price. I think I actually like the instrument microphone better than the bigger guy but both sound decent. Nice guitar sounds from my 4 x 12 cab with the 550. Nice acoustic sounds with the 551. I would recommend these mics for anyone just starting out or on a budget.
